In recognition of an extraordinary legacy of leadership and service, a new scholarship has been established at Montana State University–Northern in honor of Chancellor Greg Kegel and his wife, Sherry Kegel.

Following Chancellor Kegel’s announcement of his retirement, longtime friends Janice and Ollie Pedersen initiated the Greg and Sherry Kegel Scholarship Endowment as a tribute to the couple’s lasting impact on MSU–Northern and its students. Janice and Ollie shared that the Kegels have been a constant source of inspiration in their own lives, noting, “At a time where heroes are hard to find, Havre is fortunate, indeed, to have Greg and Sherry Kegel.” Their leadership, character, and dedication to others have left a meaningful impression not only on the university, but on the broader community.

Chancellor Kegel has dedicated 44 years to MSU–Northern, leaving a lasting mark on the institution through his leadership, vision, and unwavering commitment to student success. His contributions have shaped generations of students and strengthened the university community in countless ways.

Montana Board of Regents Chair Loren Bough, who shares Chouteau County roots with Chancellor Kegel, pledged $10,000 annually to the scholarship, bringing both personal connection and lasting commitment to honoring his fellow Chouteau County native’s legacy. Regent Bough stated, “Greg and Sherry are an inspiration for MSU-Northern, the community of Havre, and the Hi-Line.”

The Greg and Sherry Kegel Scholarship will provide meaningful financial assistance to MSU–Northern students, continuing the Kegels’ legacy of opportunity, education, and community investment.

Those interested in contributing to the scholarship are encouraged to contact the MSU–Northern Foundation at (406) 265-3711.
