We are proud to support Northern students by offering a multitude of scholarships! This page is for MSU-Northern students (future and current) who are looking to apply for scholarship awards.

How to Apply

There are several avenues to explore when applying for scholarships. There are both online applications AND physical applications that must be mailed/submitted in person.

Awards Day

The annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony will be held during Orientation Week, Fall Semester 2024. Specific date TBD.

How to Apply for Scholarships

If you are a first-year student looking to enroll at Northern in Fall 2024, you must:

Visit MSUN’s Financial Aid website for more information or to get help with your scholarship applications.

There are several scholarships that first-year students can apply for below. These scholarships have separate forms and applications that must be filled out and mailed or turned in to the Northern Alumni Foundation.

If you do not plan to attend MSU-Northern Fall 2024 and/or Spring 2025, please email  finaid@msun.edu to opt out.

Additionally, there are several scholarships that require an individual applications. All of these scholarships are located on this website AND on the Financial Aid website AND on the bulletin board in front of the Foundation Office (Cowan 305 & 307). 

Scholarships Requiring Additional Applications

Eligibility:
* Current, full-time student

* Student must not be eligible for the Pell Grant

Preference given to a library student worker (but not required).

Eligibility:
* Must be a current student who has been accepted into the Nursing Program at MSU-Northern
* Full-time student

Eligibility:
* Demonstrate financial need
* Current, full-time student 
Preference to:
* Students working toward a degree in Criminal Justice and/or pursuing careers in addiction counseling or juvenile offender intervention.
* Native American students

Eligibility:
* Current, full-time student
* Must be enrolled in one of the following trades programs: diesel tech, automotive tech, metals tech, machine tool tech, welding tech, or aviation maintenance.
* Must have graduated from a Montana high school, or have been a resident of Montana for at least a year.

Eligibility:
* Must be a full-time student
* Minimum GPA of 3.25
* Include Letter of Recommendation and short biography

 

Eligibility:
* Must have been accepted into the Nursing program at MSU-N
* Minimum GPA of 2.75 – Include unofficial transcript
Preference to:
* Students from Phillips or Valley County

Eligibility:
*Continuing student
* Must enroll as a full-time student

Preference to:
*Member of AAUW*
*Any applicant who is a relative to a member of PEO Chapter V, followed by any sisterhood relative

Eligibility:
* Continuing student
* Must enroll as a full-time student
Preference to:

Eligibility:
* Full-time student
* Pursuing a Bachelors in Diesel Tech
* Minimum GPA of 3.0
* Sophomore standing or above

Eligibility:
* Full-time student
* Majoring in Elementary Education
* Minimum GPA of 3.25
* Sophomore standing or above

Eligibility:
* Must be a current student (earned 30 credits or more by Fall 2024)
* Minimum GPA of 2.5
* Must have FAFSA on file

Eligibility:
* Incoming or current graduate students are eligible
* Must enroll at a minimum of 6 credits (part-time)
Graduate students are enrolled in one of MSUN’s master’s programs.

Eligibility:
* Open to new and continuing students
* Must enroll as a full-time student

  • Must be 21 or older
  • Incoming and/or continuing eligible
  • Full-time student
  • 500 word essay explaining why you are attending Northern and your career goal(s).
  • Letter of recommendation from non-family member

Eligibility:
* Open to new and continuing students
* Must enroll as a full-time student
Preference to:
* Students who are relatives of members of the Northern Montana College class of 1941, followed by any student with an alumni relative.

Eligibility:
* Second year student or higher
* Majoring in Education at MSU-Northern
Preference to:
* Female students

Eligibility:
* Open to new and continuing students
* Must enroll as a full-time student
Qualification:
Note: this scholarship has TWO awards available to students, but you need only submit one application
* First scholarship is for a Native American students from a Montana nation
* Second scholarship is for any student who is a resident of Montana.

Eligibility:
* Must enroll as a full-time student
* Must have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.0
* Must demonstrate co-curricular and community activities
* Must be a US citizen
Preference to:
* Montana, Idaho, Oregon and Washington high school graduates
* Montana, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington residents

Eligibility:
* Must enroll as a full-time student
* Must have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.0
* Must demonstrate co-curricular and community activities
* Must be a US citizen
Preference to:
* Montana, Idaho, Oregon and Washington high school graduates
* Montana, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington residents

Eligibility:

* Current Level II ASN student intending to enroll in the RN-BSN Completion program after graduating from the ASN Program.

Eligibility:
* Scholarship awarded to a continuing student from the surrounding area with preference given to North Star, Turner, Dodson, Malta, Chinook, Havre, Box Elder, Rocky Boy, Big Sandy, and CJI Public Schools.

* Selection made by the Havre Lions Club.

*Demonstrate community service activities such as volunteer work and/or service club membership.

Eligibility:
* Scholarship awarded to an incoming student from the surrounding area with preference given to North Star, Turner, Dodson, Malta, Chinook, Havre, Box Elder, Rocky Boy, Big Sandy, and CJI Public Schools.
* Selection made by the Havre Lions Club.
*Demonstrate community service activities such as volunteer work and/or service club membership.

Eligibility:
* Majoring in Agriculture
* Must submit application form AND a short essay

Preference to:
* Students with financial need
* Students from Montana

Eligibility:
* Must be Montana resident and have graduated from a Montana high school
* Preference given to Helena high school graduate
* Must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA
* Future goals
* Quality of application

Eligibility:
* Second year student or higher
* Majoring in Education at MSU-Northern
Preference to:
* Female students

Eligibility:
* Must be Full-time student
* Must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA
* Must be born in Montana
* Award recipient must participate in all rodeos in the Big Sky Region each school year

Eligibility:
*Enrolled in College of Technical Sciences (COTS) pursuing a degree in diesel technology,automotive, electrical, or fuels technology program.
* GPA of 3.0 or higher
* Must demonstrate upstanding character and commitment.
